Why the WHO, the European Union — and Even an Israeli Authority — Don’t Regulate Water Hardness
11/06/2026 · מי-עד מערכות סינון מים
In 2020, the European Union released an updated version of its drinking water directive — 2020/2184. Strict standards for dozens of parameters. Water hardness is not on the list. Not because they forgot.
The WHO explicitly states: “No health-based guideline value is proposed for water hardness.” The organization’s stance: Water hardness is an economic and aesthetic issue, not a health one.
What This Means in Practice
There is no law requiring your building to treat the water. The only “regulation” is your choice.
A management company that installs a central system protects the shared equipment. A building committee that decides not to — risks pipes that scale up and maintenance costs that rise.
No Drama Here — Just a Choice
The choice between a building with equipment that lasts 15 years and one with equipment that lasts 10. Between pipes with full diameter and pipes that slowly constrict.
Mei-Ad — cost per apartment less than 50 ₪ per month, 85% reduction in scale according to company tests.
