Hard Water and the Heart — What Research Says (and What It Doesn’t)

Large epidemiological studies consistently show the same pattern: The harder the water, the lower the mortality rates from heart diseases. The WHO acknowledges these findings and does not dismiss them — but it has not set a minimum value for water hardness.
What is the Difference Between Correlation and Causation
Correlation: Harder water is associated with lower heart disease mortality — a fact, proven by data.
Causation: Hard water is the cause — not proven.
A 2013 literature review (PMC3775162) and a 2023 meta-analysis (PMC10486380) found that most large studies indicate a protective correlation, but the WHO notes that the evidence is insufficient to establish a guideline value. There are discrepancies among the studies, and it is challenging to attribute the correlation solely to water.
What This Means in Practice
The calcium and magnesium that contribute to hardness are minerals your body needs. Mei-Ad does not remove these minerals — the system inhibits scale formation and leaves what the body can use.
