Americans Soften Water with Salt. Europeans Opted for Different Solutions. What’s Right for Israel?

Globally, there are two primary approaches to treating hard water. While achieving similar outcomes, they operate on fundamentally different principles.

The American Approach: Ion Exchange

The most common water softener in the United States operates through ion exchange, where sodium ions replace calcium and magnesium. This results in very soft water with reduced scale. A key consideration is that while essential minerals are removed, sodium is introduced into the water. Additionally, the softener regenerates its media using brine, which is then discharged into the sewage system. Consequently, certain authorities in California have restricted the use of some salt softeners due to their environmental impact on wastewater.

A Common Approach in Europe and Israel: Siliphos

Rather than removing minerals, this approach binds them. Siliphos is a phosphate salt that coats calcium and magnesium crystals, inhibiting their adhesion to pipes. The minerals remain in the water. There is no brine waste, no additional sodium, and no need for electricity.

This is one of the prevalent methods for treating water hardness in Europe and Israel, alongside other solutions such as ion exchange and various other systems.

What the Mei-Ad System Does

Mei-Ad installs a micron filter combined with a Siliphos salt cartridge on the building’s main water line. This achieves an 85% reduction in scale according to company tests, approved by the Standards Institute and NSF. The minerals are retained.
